An IP camera is a camera that you connect directly to your router, that works automatically and doesn't need any computer to stay on. The IP camera integrate a video server, wich can streams directly to the Net or a in a local Network. Compared to analog camera, the IP camera has many advantages, it doesn't need additional devices to exploit it, it is easily configurable (you can use any computer to do it), and since it is directly connected to the Internet, it can send emails, it can be watch from the internet without any special equipment. You can record the stream with any computer connected to the network or the net. The possibilities brought by this technology are really large and are still to be discovered. More and more companies selected IP cam Video-surveillance technology. And, like if it was not enough, IP cam systems are a lot chiper than analog systems ones. |

RSTP is the protocol needed in order to watch your cam from a 3G phone. (a protocol is a set of rules governing the communicatication between two entitie) |

When a device integrate PoE technology, it means that it is able to provide power to another device through the network cable. This is very useful for IP-Surveillance and remote monitoring applications in places where it may be too impractical or expensive to power the device from a power outlet. |

They are mainly two kinds of IP cam, the CMOS cam and the CCD cam. While a CCD cam uses a camera sensor, the CMOS cam uses a CMOS sensor, the same that we find in webcams. CMOS cams are really less expensive. Recent advances in CMOS sensors bring them closer to their CCD counterparts in terms of image quality but CCD image remains of better quality. |

DHCP means that the assignment of IP addresses to network devices will be automatically. When a device is connected to the network, DHCP will choose an IP address that is not used and will assign it to the device. |

the focal length of a camera lens determines the width of the horizontal field of view. |

In a network, each device or computer is given a name (the IP) so that it can communicate with other devices ans computers using this name. The IP is sequence of numbers, IP example: 192.168.0.1 |

MPEG-4 is a video format that need 3 to 5 times less space than MPEG for the same video. It is the equivalent to MP3 but for video. |

SMTP is used for sending e-mail. It is a protocol. |

As the focal length of a camera lens is the width of the horizontal field of view, a varifocal lens provides a wide range of focal lengths in opposition to a fixed lens. |

ActiveX is a kind of software used by Internet Explorer that enables it to interact with another software, regardless of its language. ActiveX is used, in IP cam technology, to allow you not only to watch but also to exploit you IP cam capabilities from Internet Explorer. |

CCD means that the camera uses a CCD sensor, in opposition to a CMOS sensor. CCD sensor are used in the common digital camera and provide an image of better quality while CMOS sensor are used for webcams. Although more expensive, CCD image remains of better quality. |

Several users can simultaneously watch the IP cam stream in several resolution. If one user is watching the stream at a resolution of 320x240, another user can watch it at a resolution of 160x120, and another one can watch it at 640x480. |

IR allows vision even when there is no light. |
