Durban’s hi-tech crackdown on criminals over the festive season was highly successful and augurs well for a safer city in 2008.
With 191 infrared-equipped CCTV cameras spread across Durban and surrounding areas, police have made an average of 12 arrests a day - and they’re not just for petty crime.
Clever use of the cameras also led to the recent arrest of five men linked to previous cash-in-transit heists.
The cameras are spread throughout the city and suburbs, including Umhlanga Rocks, Pinetown and Durban International Airport and municipal manager Dr Michael Sutcliffe said they “are prioritising the CCTV system as part of a broader strategy to deal with urban management and creating a safer city”.
IP surveillance technology has reached one of those “perfect storm” moments. Today’s digital cameras are inexpensive and easy to install. Wired and wireless networks alike are ubiquitous. And the camera-monitoring software is robust, easy-to-use and often free. Demand for security cams is high among both businesses and home users, and system builders stand to capitalize on this surging wave by offering installation services and support. There’s even potential for computer and server upgrades, as some companies will be looking to build dedicated systems that have guaranteed bandwidth and quality of service (QoS) over the video network.

(Datamonitor via COMTEX) — CETXF | charts | news | PowerRating — US-based networking and communications company CNet Technology has launched the CIC-920W, a wireless IP camera to cater to the small office/home office and end-user markets. According to the company, the camera offers a MPEG-4 video compression, 640×480 image resolution, motion detection, alarm notification and Wi-Fi protected access wireless security. The company added that the camera can be used to monitor employee safety or activities of the family at home.

What is a Video Server?
A Video Server is a device that converts an analog camera signal into a digital signal and allows the video to be viewed on computers and recorded to digital equipment. The coax cable from an analog camera would plug directly into the Video Server which would then convert the analog video signal from the camera into a digital signal that can be transmitted over Ethernet to PC’s or NVR’s (Network Video Recorder).
